There is an alarming trend in America, and in many other parts of the world. It seems like more and more people are gaining too much weight. In fact, about 35% of adults in the United States are obese. The question, though, is why are so many people obese?

There are many reasons why people might become obese. It all depends on their circumstances, but here are 7 reasons that definitely affect most obese people.

1. Genetics

Some people are genetically predisposed to becoming obese. That means that they are more likely to gain weight, more likely to have trouble losing weight, or both. However, just because obesity may run in your family does not mean that you will automatically grow up to be obese. There are a lot of other factors to consider.

2. Metabolism

We each have our own metabolic rate. That’s the rate at which our bodies burn calories. We gain weight when we take in more calories than we burn off. So, if you have a slow metabolic rate, that can make it harder for you to lose weight. However, there are ways to increase your metabolic rate. Exercise can also boost your metabolism.

3. Eating Too Much Junk or Fast Food

Pre-packaged junk food is becoming far too common for our own good. The same goes for fast food restaurants. It seems like there’s at least one on almost every single corner. While some of them are starting to offer a few healthy choices, most of the meal choices are still greasy, fatty, and generally unhealthy. Many of them also contain way too many calories. Another reason why people in general, and especially Americans, seem to be getting more obese is portion size increases. Dinner plates used to only be 7 to 9 inches wide. Now they are as much as 12 inches wide. The larger the plate, the more likely we are to put more on it. The more we put on it, the more we eat.

That trend also extends to fast food chains. Some fast food restaurants are now offering burgers that contain 3 or even 4 patties, multiple layers of cheese and so on. The sizes of their french fry and beverage containers have also grown to ridiculous amounts. A small soda used to actually be small. Nowadays, many places offer small sodas that are nearly as large as a person’s head.

5. Changes in Work and Home Environments

Changes in work environments in recent years have also contributed to obesity. Not only are many more people working in office cubicles all day and getting almost no exercise, but a lot of people are also working from home on their couches, which means that they don’t even leave their houses on a regular basis.

In the 1980s, it was common to see people working and playing outside much more often than they do now. Today’s people are more likely to be glued to a TV or computer monitor, not outside taking a bike ride or going for a swim. Those sedentary people are gaining a lot more weight than the active people of the 1980s.

6. Lifestyle Choices

Lifestyle choices can also contribute to obesity. For example, a person who drinks large amounts of alcohol is likely to gain weight much faster than a person who does not. Unfortunately, bad habits like drinking too much alcohol are not easy to stop, especially if a person is already depressed about being obese. So, it’s easy to see why one problem could feed into the other.

7. Pushing Too Far

Finally, many people are simply pushing their bodies too far. You see, it gets harder and harder for the human body to lose weight as more weight is packed on. A person who has a lot of lean muscle can easily burn fat.

A person who has almost no lean muscle will have a much harder time shedding the pounds. That’s why many obese people get so discouraged whenever they try a new weight loss plan. Often they either lose very little, or lose quite a bit, but put it right back on again.

So, what is the key to ending the obesity trend? Well, it’s been said before, but it’s worth saying again. We all need to start eating healthier foods and get back to being more active. That’s the only way to change the obesity trend to one of health and fitness.

Why is Belly Fat a Concern?

How to get rid of the belly fat is the most frequent question I have been asked during my weight loss practice. In order to create toned and healthy tummy we need to understand what belly fat is. Belly fat in scientific terms is called visceral fat, which is adipose tissue (fat) located around your organs in the abdomen. Belly fat has different characteristics than the fat under your skin (subcutaneous fat), which does not increase health risk in manner that belly fat does.

So what makes visceral fat so dangerous?

Visceral fat is not a dead, inert substance, instead the adipocites (fat cells) are metabolically active, producing hormones and releasing dozens of biologically active substances that can contribute to disease, such as heart disease, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes and breast cancer. The substances your belly fat produces interfere with your body’s ability to use insulin and consequently impact how hungry you are and how much fat you burn. It is wrong thinking that fat tissue is a passive organ, actually it is a very complex, dynamic system. Anyway an excessive amount of any kind of fat tissue boosts estrogen levels, which can increase the risk of serious health problems.

How to measure your waist and check if your health is at risk because of belly fat?

Waist circumference measurement is a good indicator for how your health is on risk because of visceral fat.

Simply measurement of your waist:

  • Place a tape measure around your bare stomach, just above your hipbone.
  • Bring the tape measure all the way around, but doesn’t push it too tight.
  • Relax, exhale and measure your waist, Don’t hold your breath while measuring it!

Here you can check your results to know if you have too much belly fat:

Woman:

  • normal healthy below 80 cm (31 inches)
  • overweight 80-88 cm (31–35 inches)
  • obese more than 88 cm (35 inches)

Interesting is that belly fat is most common in men than in women, but after menopause, the amount of visceral fat in women increase.

Man:

  • normal healthy below 94 cm (37 inches)
  • overweight 94-102 cm (37–40 inches)
  • obese more than 102 cm (40 inches)

Recapitulating, for men a waist measurement of 40 inches(102 centimeters) or more and for women 35 inches (88cm) or more is considered cause for concern and unhealthy concentration of belly fat.
